Tips for Taking Selcas

Kpop stars are experts at taking selcas since it's their job to look picture-prefect, and they do it often - usually to update their SNS accounts or to connect with their fans on a more personal level. Take a cue from your idols and follow these tips.

GET READY.

Do you have food stuck in between your teeth? Is every hair strand of hair in place?

Unless, this is what your gunning for, always check your appearance beforehand. A mirror, a window or any reflective device (sunglasses, a silver spoon, the shiny pieces of metal stuck to your jacket ;) ) will do. When none are available, take a test shot or ask the person beside you if you're picture-ready.

PICK A CONCEPT

Cute? Sexy? Dorky?

Decide on your image before taking your shot to know what pose to make. For cute, put on a bubbly expression and evoke childlike playfulness by pouting or puffing up your cheeks. Evoke a more serious face for a sexier look, or purse your lips and angle your face so your matured side is highlighted. If you're going for dorky, make expressions that show you're not taking the whole shot seriously - stick out your tongue or look surprised.

BRING IN SOME PROPS

Props can emphasize the mood you want for your selca. Anything goes: a towel, pillow, glasses, pet, headgear, fake tears and even a sign board - anything! Remember to be creative and make the props match the mood you want to express.

KNOW YOUR ANGLE

Not everyone can look perfect at every angle. Review photos you've taken in the past to know which suits you best. Experiment and practice - soon your pose will feel natural to you, and every picture you take will be effortless.

** RIGHT ANGLES **

  • Don’t look straight into the camera especially if your face is round. Tilt your head a little to the side or upward to emphasize more jawline (“V” line”) and to project a slimmer face.
  •  For happy, smiling poses, it always helps to crinkle your eyes as if something funny really happened.
  •  A shot lying down on a bed will also help project a slimmer face. Thanks to gravity, your cheeks won't look full from this angle.
  • If you do have to look straight into the camera, tilt your head down; lowering your chin keeps your face slim.

:) Kimchi!!! :)

In this digital age, it's easy to delete and re-take shots, so keep snapping until you're satisfied. Best of all, you can practice anywhere, anytime - while camping outside your idol's management office, while in line for a concert - so soon enough, you'll find the pose that expresses who you are best. Taking pictures is an enjoyable and creative activity - get crazy and  have fun!
